Star Wars and its Influence on America

“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...” These are the words that we have all come to know so well. Saying these words gives us right away images that we have seen so many times. These ten words are the opening of a movie that has had such a huge influence on our culture, Star Wars.

Star Wars is a science fiction movie about good vs. evil. It is futuristic, yet to be placed a long time again.  The movie is placed in space, showing many different planets where, Jedi knights fight The Dark Side. Many characters are put within the different episodes (episodes is what they call each movie.) Anakin Skywalker is a jedi, Darth Vader, who turns evil through hate with the Sith lord's help. In the sixth episode the Dark side is defeated and the rebels ( against the dark side) had won the on going battle.

The Star Wars uses this conman line in every movie over and over again, "May the force be with you." This line is what it is known for, also it says a lot about the worldview of the episodes A New hope or episode IV was the first movie to hit the theater. The following is the original trailer that came out in 1977.

The Following is a summary of the very first movie that came out, Episode IV Star  Wars: A New Hope.

“Palpatine, an evil Sith Lord, has overthrown the galactic Republic and become emperor of the new Empire. The Jedi Knights, an ancient peacekeeping order empowered and guided by the Force, have been eradicated.
Princess Leia Organa is a member of the Rebel Alliance, a group fighting to defeat the Empire and restore the Republic. She’s on a mission to bring Obi Wan Kenobi, an exiled Jedi living on Tatooine, to Alderan. The mission fails when her spaceship falls under attack by an Imperial star cruiser. Leia hides stolen schematics of the Empire’s Death Star, a powerful new space station, inside R2D2, a small droid, R2 and another android, C3P0 stow away in an escape pod and jettison to Tatooine.
The two droids are found by Jawas and sold to farmer Owen Lars. Owen’s young nephew and farmhand, Luke Skywalker dreams of leaving Tatooine and becoming a pilot like his late father. While cleaning the small droid, Luke stumbles across a partial holographic message for Obi Wan Kenobi. Intrigued by the beautiful young woman in the holograph, he thinks the message may be for Ben Kenobi, a hermit living on the outskirts.
When Luke discovers R2 missing the next morning, he and C3P0 search for him in Luke’s land speeder. They locate him, but encounter the hostile sand people. Ben Kenobi rescues them, and Luke learns Ben is actually Obi Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Knight. They watch the holograph in which Princess Leia implores Obi Wan to deliver theDeath Star technical plans to her father. It’s hoped a weakness in its defenses can be found. Obi Wan tells Luke that his father, Anakin Skywalker, was also a Jedi, and he was betrayed and murdered by Darth Vader, Obi Wan’s former apprentice. Vader was seduced by the dark side of the Force and now serves the emperor. Obi Wan tells Luke he must learn the ways of the Force and go with him to Alderan. An incredulous Luke refuses, but agrees to take Ben to nearby Mos Eisley to findtransportation. Realizing R2 and C3P0 could be traced to his family, Luke rushes home only to find his aunt and uncle murdered by Imperial storm troopers searching for the droids.
Luke now wants to become a Jedi and goes with Obi Wan. In Mos Eisley they meet Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon, and Chewbacca, a wookie and Han’s first mate. Han, a smuggler with a bounty on his head, agrees to fly the passengers to Alderan for a hefty fee. Just as they’re about to depart, storm troopers swarm the hanger, and the Falcon barely escapes.
Meanwhile, Princess Leia is captive aboard the unfinished Death Star. Darth Vader demands the location of the rebel base camp, but Leia resists. Death StarCommander, Grand Moff Tarkin plots a course for Alderan, and threatens to destroy Leia’s home world if she refuses to reveal where the rebels are hidden. Unable to sacrifice Alderan, she provides coordinates, but Tarkin blasts the planet to demonstrate the Death Star’s full power. The information Leia gave Vader is false, and he schedules her execution.
The Millennium Falcon arrives in the Alderan system, only to encounter the planet’s shattered remains. Han spots an Imperial fighter near a small moon, but Obi Wan realizes too late that it’s actually a massive space station. As they attempt to retreat, the ship is caught by a tractor beam and pulled towards the Death Star. There is no escape, but Han has a plan.”

Star wars is not just an epic movie, rather it is six epic movies, or even two trilogies. The Star Wars Trilogy and the Prelude Trilogy. It is different from other movies because it did not come out in order rather it came out in episodes IV, V, VI, I, II, III. As has been written above Star Wars.

A New Hope: Episode IV, was the first movie to come out in 1977. To which made America is awe of the technology shown through this movie.

The Empire Strikes: Episode V, was the second movie to come out in 1980. Only three years later due to the success of the first one.

Return of the Jedi: Episode VI, was the third movie to come out in 1983. Other then the order they came out, this is the last movie, ending the story.

The Phantom Menace: Episode I, was the fourth movie to come out in 1999.  There was a big gap between the two trilogies because the creator wanted to have the effects be far more real then in the past which took more time to do .Link
Attack of The Clones: Episode II, was the fifth movie to come out in 2002. This was the first film that used high definition.  Link

Revenge of the Sith: Episode III, was the sixth movie to come out in 2005. This movie was the last of the movies.

There truly was a difference between the first and second trilogy in the effects alone. Times had changes within the few years and we had become far more technologically advanced. The time difference not only made the pictures look more realistic, it also, changed the character. Take Yoda, the Jedi master, for an example.
This Picture is from the first trilogy.

This picture is from the second trilogy, which is much more realistic.
George Lucas truly was the mastermind behind Star Wars, creating the scene visually and verbally. He created a new phenomenon, that has changed america for better. With 20th Century Fox, he was able to finally produces his space film he was hoping to create after being turned down by many others. His ideas for this film, though it was very different from anything else, was inspired from Flesh Gordon and Lord of The Rings. Link

"Besides his directorial and production work on movies, Lucas is one of the most significant contemporary contributor to modern movie technology" Quotes Source. A New Hope had won many awards for its special effects. The movie was far beyond its time with the technology it introduced. For example the light saber, droids, fighter plans, clones, and even the death star. It gave American's a whole new idea of creativity when it came to technology.

Star Wars has left a big influence on our country, and even other countries for that matter. There  is everything star wars, for a lunch box to a shirt, to a phone cover. MacDonald's toys were sold with Happy Meals. The special effects change other movies, because they had to then match Star Wars as a product. However, it was not only the visual that it gave but it was also,

Star Wars toys in and of themselves are huge, there are action figures, life size life sabers, and logo fighter planes. It soon seemed that every boy had at least one of these items. Video games were huge when it came to Star wars, it gave people the change to live out their favorite movie.

Something else that gave Star Wars fans a chance to love the story out is my STAT TOURS. This is on of many Star Wars themed rides. Source

"One of Reagan's controversial proposals was the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), a system intended to make the U.S. invulnerable to nuclear missile attacks by the Soviet Union. By stationing those defenses in outer space, the U.S. was able to circumvent the United Nation's Anti-Ballistic (ABM) Treaty."Quote's Source Through cold war we had been afraid of the Soviet Union building a better atomic bomb then us, so we kept building. ( The weird thing about it is how much alike atomic bombs and the death star look alike.)  The more we built the more they would build. Until missiles came into the equation which took it into a whole new level. President Reagan then put together a program in space to help defend our country. A speech was also made about this in 1983. Because it was having to do with space they were called Star Wars.

Star Wars we will find is everywhere that we go. It has a huge influence on our country in that many products were made because of it. With the Cold War going on, they went together very well. The technology changed america because they saw these products and thought if they would have them in the future, almost as if the technology would then be expected to happen. one thing is gore sure though. Star Wars still has as many fans as it did in 1977.

The Tale of Dr. Seuss

source
When one thinks of Dr. Seuss, we all think of these wonderful books that we all grow up learning to read from, and continuing that reading even after we could read. He was a genius when it came to entertaining children with cleaver literature. His books are filled with adventures, rhyming, humor, and fun, they are what might call whimsical. Also, they are known all around the world, being translated in little over fifteen languages. However, We will soon find out that Dr. Seuss was much more then an amazing children's author.

Theodor Seuss Deisel, Dr. Seuss only been being his pen name, was born to Theodor Robert and Henrietta (Seuss) Deisel. He was born on March 2, 1905 in Springfield, Massachusetts. His family supervised their local pubic park, which later came important for his first book.
Theodor, was clearly a character as seen through his life's work in written form. However, this did not start from the age of an adult. For his college years where something to remembered. He went to Dartmouth College, being part of the class of 1925. Clearly being a written he was part of the Humor Magazine, in time he was not only part of it but he because the editor in chief of this magazine for his school.

Source
Something very important to note is that, the time the young man that Theodor was at the time, was the time of the Prohibition . Meaning that not only was it against the college's rules to drink, but it was currently a law of the united states until it got repealed in 1933. Keeping this in mind, Theodor and a few of his college buddies had a party that included a lot of alcohol. The Dean of the college had punished him by removing him from everything but the necessary classes he needed to take.
Now, for Theodor to stop writing for his humor magazine was not an option, in his opinion. This, is the beginning of the so well known Dr. Seuss's pen name started. In order to keep writing he started signing his works “Seuss.” Theodor transferred to Lincoln College, Oxford. Here we studied literature and philosophy. After a time there, he found his studies to not be relevant, so he did what any young man would do that was creatively smart, he dropped out. However, he did find his first wife at this college, Helen Palmer. Who just happened to turn out to be another children author.
Source

Theodor was not just a children's author at this point. He was writing scripts for plays and movies at this point. He was also writing humor for a few different places. He started illustrating for other peoples works. He was drawing cartoons, Theodor was even in a advertisement. Just as we have commercials today that become every popular and everyone is quoting it, this is exactly what happened to his advertisement. At this point in his life he was making more and more of the Seuss that we know and love today.

source

These are of the many things he did to support himself and his wife during the war, one his best known books was written, that is still read today, this is his first children book he wrote and published. Getting this book published was no easy task for it took twenty seven attempts to get someone to published it. Not knowing what they missed out on he went to the twenty eighth place, Vanguard Press. (take note that the number of times this story was rejected will change from source to source, this being the most conman source)

source

The book is called, “And to Think I saw it on Mulberry Street.” This is a very well known book to all of those who grew up reading his books. Remember how his dad worked for local public parks? Well one of these just happened to be on Mulberry street. What Seuss did, was he wrote about a boy who imagined all these going down the street. This street was a street in the Springfield, the town that he grew up in. Dr. Seuss, for all his creatively and imagination surprisingly pulls a lot of his ideas from his own personal life and experiences. This was published in 1937.
source

The time period that heavily effected his writing was World War II. Not only did Theodor keep writing and illustrating his own children's books during the war, but he always wrote about four hundred political cartoons. Clearly there was much more to Dr. Seuss then writing cleaver children's books. Geisel, very much was a Democratic and supporter Roosevelt's decision as president. A majority of his cartoons were about Hitler, his doings, and our response to his acts and a country. However, he did quite often poke fun at the congress not supporting them. He supported the war act by his works for publicity. One thing that Dr. Seuss did very wrong was he was very racist against Japan and it was made every clear in his war cartoons, even as he was anti-African Americans racism and anti-semitism, Not only did he draw cartoons for the war effort he joined the army as a captain, here he wrote films for the army, these that he did even won awards. After the war, he published his political cartoons in a book called, “Dr. Seuss goes to war.”
Source
source

After the war was over, him and his wife moved to La Jolla, California where he wrote most of his books for children. When Dr. Seuss saw that the kids were not learning to read well and did not enjoy reading, he saw this as a challenge and took it. He started writing simple books that had only around two hundred and fifty words in the whole book. These books were those such as, “Cat and the Hat” and “Hop on Pop.”

“On October 23, 1967, suffering from a long struggle with illnesses including cancer, as well as emotional pain over her husband's affair with Audrey Stone Dimond, Geisel's wife, Helen Palmer Geisel, committed suicide.Geisel married Dimond on June 21, 1968. Though he devoted most of his life to writing children's books, Geisel had no children of his own. He would say, when asked about this, "You have 'em; I'll entertain 'em."” On September 24, 1991 he passed away of throat cancer, leaving is legened to carry on.

As a child growing up and reading book after book writen by Dr. Seuss, they are just adventure after adventure, intertaning story books that are fun to read, and let us face it, they have some really awesome pictures to look at. As a child he is just thought of as the guy with the funny hat and cool stories. However, we have found out that his tale has so much more to it. He did not just write random stories, but these stroies has points to them. ( most to which being politcal. ) Horten hears a who is all about anti-racism. In a way, it is him taking about just judgment about Japan by saying, “A person is a person no matter now small.” This book was also, a way to introduce his ideas about profive and supporting it with the same famous quote. The hat that his trademark wore, the cat in the hat was the hat that many people know as uncle sams hat. The grinch that stole Christmas was to call out materism. He used a lot of books to encourage equal rights after the war. He even used a lot of famale roles to encourage equal rights bewteen men amd women.
We have found out that there was much more to this man then just cleaver writing, but rather that he was so much more. He was an artice, cartoonist, polical man, a screen writer, and a play writer. Not using mindless stories, but using his stories to use his points and what he believed in. Remember, “A person is a person no matter how small.”
Source

We still honor him by reading his books in schools, learning from them sharing them down from generation to generation. Moveis are made out of this books, and there has even been a play after his book “Hortan hears a Who” called Sessical the Musical. We celebrate his birthday every year as a holiday, March 2nd. In honor of him it has become the Read Across American Day.

The following is the forty four children's book that he wrote over the years.

Soup Kitchens of the Great Depression

The Great Depression, was a time for heart ache all over the world, it was almost as if a great bomb had went off all over the world and had effected everyone in one way or another. Banks went bankrupt, business ran out, and people's homes were foreclosed. It was a hard time for everyone in the family. With everything closing down families could barely eat. There was no money to buy the food. The people were forced to depend upon others generosity, the Great Depression led to the start of soup kitchens.

The soup kitchens is where anyone in need of food can come and receive a meal for free. The name came from what was being served, soup. Soup and bread were the most economical friendly food around. With soup you can pretty much put anything in it to make soup, then water can be add to make it for father and feed more mouths. More water would have been added the more and more people who started to come. All the food would have had to be donated from different places, people of the community, stores, and major companies all had a part in help donating the food in order to food more mouths. The need for soup kitchens was very evident, especially because about twenty five percent of the of the workforce was unemployed just a few years into the depression. So with these people out of work and little to no means of making money the soup kitchen started. Others had stepped in to help others out, when they couldn't. The weird thing about it was that it was not just one group of people going out to help, but very different groups putting together the soup kitchens. source

The soup kitchens started to pop up all over the untied states around 1929. Most of which were located in big cities such was Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angles. Just as before a number of people really started the soup kitchens. Such as a lot of churches, non-profit organizations, the government, and even the famous gangster Al Capone. “Capone's soup kitchen was made to clean up the gangster's bad reputation, and served three meals a day to ensure that all who had lost jobs would be able to get a meal. The first soup kitchen was in Detroit, Michigan by the Capuchin Services Center and was opened on November 2, 1929, which was only a few days after the crash. The volunteers working there served somewhere from 1,500 to 3,000 people a day in the ridiculously long lines. And if anyone was out in the country they would have to go into town to get some food for themselves.” Link

Most if not all soup kitchens were ran by mostly volunteers who could come and help cook the food and also serve those who came. Even those who were there for the food would come to help serve the food to others. The was a very important part of soup kitchens are part of why they were and are so successful. With out help, the soup kitchens would have not been able to feed so many people. source

The country being in such bad shape, the natural thing that happened to culture, together we are going to blame someone. Herbert Hoover, was the who was blamed for this crash. He had help start many major soup kitchens but still. He was the one out people blamed. Because of this soup kitchens had gotten the nickname “Hoover Cafes.” source

Soup kitchens now have turned into something a little different then it started out as in the depression. Now soup kitchens have either turned into food banks or homeless out reaches. Food is donated by grocery stores all over the nation. From there hot meals are prepared or other places the groceries to straight to those in need. Such as "Feeding the Hungry" in Hawaii, Around five hundred men and woman in need are given food for the week. Volunteers are still there to pass out the food, as they were in the depression. The number of people needing food has gone way down, yet they are still there. Without soup kitchens are country would have been and would be in a far worse place with lots of hungry people.

Charlemagne King of the Franks

"The greatest of medieval kings was born in 742, at a place unknown. He was of German blood and speech, and shared some characteristics of his people- strength of body, courage of spirit, pride of race, and a crude simplicity many centuries apart from the urbane polish of the modern French. He had little book learning; read only a few books- but good ones; tried in his old age to learn writing, but never quite succeeded; yet he could speak old Teutonic and literary Latin, and understood Greek." This Quote is talking about Charemagne, which means Charles the Great. His name was very much deserved. He built up an amazing empire as one King, and changed history forever. Link

Not much at all is own about Charlemagne's childhood, but we do know about his wonderful life as a ruler. At the age of 28 he become King of the Franks ( which is now days France.) However, this was only when he bother Carloman died in 711 giving the whole kingdom to Charlemagne. From there a whole new empire started to bloom. He was a great leader, taking his people on over fifty military expeditions. This causing the kingdom to grow. By 800 he had speared it over most of Western Europe, places like The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, many other, and of course Franc. One of the keys to his, or anyone, susses was to be organized
Source

Charlemagne had not got this point of authority by bring merciful, But instead by inputting justice and being ferm. One would have to be with so much land to over rule and keep in order. He liked to always knew what was going on in his kingdom. Every law was to be followed and in forced. However, he did let other religions keep to their way to the most part.
Link

An amazing part about Charlemagne was that he would neither really write nor read. However, he still learned many many different languages and had read many books ( by having them read out loud of course) It was not that he was stupid and could not learn these things, for indeed he was a very smart man. It was just that it was not the way of the Frankish Nobles, they saw it as a waste of their time, so really it was just a tradition.
link

Charlemagne, truly deserved his name, Charles the Great. He had created a whole new age that change history as we know it today. Over coming things like not being able to read or write very well, and yet still archiving conquering tons of powerful lands. However, most every thing has to come to an end. In 810 he died, leaving his empire to his thee sons splitting up the lead. This cause to the power to wakened and lead to the fall of the Charlene empire .

Trade and Slave-Trade Within The Islamic World

The Arabic world was a great and powerful world. An important factor to the success was trade through out the known world with the imam ( the Islamic community ). Much would be traded, however, one of the vital things were slaves. The Islamic empire in theory was based upon equality. However, this was only for Arabic men, women and slaves did not have nearly the same rights. Slaves could not be Muslim there for they had to come from different places. The slaves were either captured in war, or they came by trade. Link

"The relationship between Islam and trade is not well appreciated in the West. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his wife Khadija were both merchants. The Qarun the Muslim scripture, is filled with parables using the language of trade. It was merchants, not soldiers, who were mainly responsible for the spread of Islam throughout the world."

The Quran encouraged people to trade, and grow prosperous. Unlike other societies, where the men that went off to war were just the heroes. In the Arabic world merchants, scientist , teachers... etc. were all looked up to. Muhammad was a merchant and so was most of his family was as well. Trade was a big part for the spread of Islam. With the trade of slaves they helped support the society because they would be sent to fight with the other men, and the slaves help with the house hold leaving less work for the owners. However, something to remember was that empire was not grand because they had the work of slaves like Rome or Greece, but because of the minds and works of the community. Link

Slave trade within the Arabic would was not like, other slavery we have seen though out the years. Their slaves were treated much more fairly then other slaves have been. The Quran told Allah's people to treat their slaves well. They would be feed and clothed very well for a slave. Also, it would be considered a act of atonement because of sin to free ones slave. A slave owner was so never hurt his slave, there is this saying, "who ever kills his slave, we will them." Link

Another thing that was different about their slavery was, The Arabic people didn't just in slave one type of people. Anyone no matter want race, color, anything like that, other then a follower of Allah, they could have been a slave. There was also, not a specific racial group, party because "Arabs" were not a specific race. Some would be European, others middle eastern, other would be African. Link, Source
Trade was important in Arab peninsula world because it was the crossroad to Asia and Europe. Trade was vital to the development. "caravan routes became trade arteries that made life possible in the sparsely populated peninsula." Lotion was very important with trading. Constantinople was a great trading place because it connected Europe and Asia, Cairo was also, a great trading place because it was in between Africa and Asia. Last but not least, Cordoba was a trading place for Europe and Africa. source

Camel caravans was how most things got transported if not by ship. Many things came from Asia, like spices. Spices were very expensive and was something very body wanted. Along with spices, things like salt, gold, and silver were all things brought from Asia. The routs that they look were kept secret. Many discovers tried finding a way to get to Asia for there goods. This was how America was discovered.Link

Greeks and Persains

Though out ancient history the Greeks ( google book) and the Persians( google book) fought. They had two very different cultures, however they both did wan to same thing. Both Civilisations wanted to conquer the world. The Persian Empire was very lager, however they wanted to make to even bigger. The Greeks wanted to make very one like them, they wanted speared their culture though out the world. Link

Greece was a upcoming place, it was besoming great in a very short amount of time. Greece was being coming a threat the the Persians. The Persians wanting to rule could not have Greece or Athens become more powerful them then. Leading up to many wars against the Greeks, In the Persian decide that they were going to conquer Greece. link

The Battle at Marathon was when the Persians come to take over Greece. Marathon was twenty miles from Athens, Greece. At This Battle The Greeks won, giving a new hope that they would defeat the Persians. A good thing about them fighting with the person was it was the one and only time that it brought Greece together as one. Athens and Sparta were fighting all the time, this one time however, they work together as one. link

"This battle meant a boost for the Athenian self-confidence, and the city became even stronger after the discovery of silver ore near Laurion. The new affluence was used to build a large navy."
The way that the Greeks would defect the Persians was by water. The Greeks had the best navy a around. it was smaller then the Persians. The way the Greeks won, was they would out think the Persian something that people from Athens was very good at. link

"For the Persians this defeat was a relatively minor affair. Their empire would last for 150 years more, and would often play a leading, if largely indirect, role in Greek affairs. For the Greeks the results were far more marked. They took great pride in their success against overwhelming odds, and became still more proud of their culture and conscious of the difference which they believed distinguished them from their "barbarian" neighbors. " There were two very different place that wanted the same thing. The Greeks were very proud of what they had done. source

Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great was a very strong leader. He lead many military excursions winning everyone of them. Alexander was a student of the famous Greek philosopher, Aristotle. He trained Alexander in many thing, this would help him the great leader that he was .
Link

Alexander, born in Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia he was the son of the King, Philip II.
Growing up he was a student under Aristotle. His Father wanted him to learn from one of the best, which did he, for we are still learning from him today. Alexander Leander about philosophy, literature, science, medicine, and rhetoric.
Link

When His father, Philip II died, Alexander took over as king at the age of twenty. In those twenty years he rulered more land then any other king in his history. Soon after he was made Pharaoh of Egypt, He conquered Greece's great enemy Persia, as well as the lands of Egypt and as far as India. google-books link

This is true, Alexander the Great want to war to win over country's, he never lost a battle. However he was greatly loved. Alexander was known to let people still do things the way they did them before like their religion. It is said that part of what made him so great was his character. It what won over most of his people. google-books

"Before his death, he conquered most of the world known to the ancient Greeks." Alexander had a short life for he lived until the age of thirty three. In his life time did many great things, he had goals in his life and he did things to make sure that he would meet his goals. Alexander the great is someone who we will still learn from to this day. link
